Each upgrade to your armor increase your defense, and each upgrade to your weapon increase your damage.

If you succeed in upgrading, a 'SUCCESS' message will display on top of your character's head and the item will have a +1 (or a higher number) added to the front of its item name.

If the upgrade fails, the item, zeny used, and any cards in the slots will be destroyed completely.

Armor refine adds different amount of DEF for Pre-Re and Renewal:

That means a +10 armor in Pre-Re will add 6.6 DEF stats.

That means a +20 armor in Renewal will add 60 DEF stats.

Below are the locations of various Refine NPCs in most major cities. The NPCs can be hidden inside a small room of a building so be sure to look around. Usually you will also find a Material Salesman that sells Phracon and Emveretarcon, an Oridecon/Elunium Refiner and an Equipment Repairman alongside the Main Upgrade NPCs.

~ Refining with Enriched Ores ~

Increased Success Rates with Enriched Ores:

There is a higher chance of success when refining with Enriched Ores (see tables below). Enriched Ores can only be used from +1 to +10 refinement. However, as with refining with normal ores when the result is a failure the item and any slotted cards will be destroyed.

To refine with Enriched Ores, you must find NPC Suhnbi at central Payon near the other refinement NPCs indicated on the Payon map above. Suhnbi can also be found on the second floor of the Eden Group building for servers that have the Eden Quest System feature available.

~ Refining in Renewal ~

Upgrade above +10:

In Renewal Ragnarok, it is possible to upgrade your weapon and armor to above the +10 limit. If the server you are playing on have this feature implemented, you should find this special upgrade NPC (by the name Vestri or Bestry depend on server versions) inside one of the rooms in the same building as the Prontera Refine NPCs. The same NPC is also available in Morroc and Payon inside buildings nearby the normal refine NPCs.

~ Refining with HD Ores ~

HD Ores are items used for refining in Renewal servers. They serve the normal refine success rate but instead of breaking the item on a failure, the item is preserved with its refinement reduced by one (-1). Only item that is +7 or higher can be refined with HD Ores.

Refine with Item Protection from +7 to +10:

To refine with HD Ores, your item must be at least +7 or higher. You can find NPC Mighty Hammer near the normal refine NPCs at various locations or on the second floor of the Eden Group building. He will refine your item up to +10 with the required HD Ores (see table above).

Refine with Item Protection from +10 to +20:

NPC Basta (can be named differently depending on server versions) located near the normal refine NPCs at various locations or inside the Eden Group building will refine your item from +10 to +20 with HD Ores. You must have the required HD Ores (see table above) and the target item must be between +10 and +19 to use his service.

~ Refining Shadow Gears ~

A single Shadow Gear costume or a Shadow Gear Set could give extra effect when its refinement reaches a certain levels. However, refined Shadow Gear will not gain any defense or damage bonus as with normal gears. Check the Shadow Gear's item description for any benefits you could gain for upgrading.

The process of refining Shadow Gear is a lot like refining normal gear. There are few points to keep in mind:

• To refine Shadow Gears, you must use Shadow Blacksmith located in the same building as the other refine NPCs in Prontera.
• Fees for each refine is 20,000z.
• Shadow Gears can only be refined up to +10.
• All parts are safe up to +4, after +4 there is a chance to fail.
• You may use normal ores, enriched ores or HD ores. The success rate for each type of ores used is identical to the success rate of armor refine using the corresponding ore type.
